Important medal in 18k (750°/°°) gold depicting the Virgin Mary in profile haloed by diamonds rose-cut and plique-à-jour enamel. The medal is enhanced by a surround of diamonds and the clasp is also set with diamonds rose-cut enamel. Signed F. VERNON. French work from the Art-Nouveau period circa 1900. Presence of the eagle head hallmark for 18-carat gold. Frédéric Charles Victor de Vernon (1858 - 1912) was a French sculptor and medal engraver. An engraving prize bears his name. He produced remarkable medals, often using complex enameling techniques and excellent chasing quality. His medals are rare and sought-after, and form part of major jewelry collections such as that of the Victoria & Albert Museum.
