Cartier Santos "Vendôme" Steel - Large Model - c. 1980
Change the form without changing the substance
Description
Françoise is always amazed by the variations Cartier is capable of on a single design! The Maison often plays with the shapes, colors, or sizes of a model while maintaining its core identity: here we have yet another example. Cartier has managed to retain the geometric aspect and codes of the Santos, while transitioning from a square to a round shape.
We find the same studded insert on a steel case that made the Santos so successful in the 1980s. For this rounded model, Cartier plays on symmetry by distributing the studs slightly unevenly on the insert. Perhaps a more discreet version thanks to the steel.
Why did Françoise choose her?
This all-steel Cartier Santos can be worn every day. It's a watch that exudes a sporty yet elegant look, as is typical of Cartier. The supple bracelet and slim case make it very comfortable to wear. Françoise clearly loves the Santos, a quintessential model in the Cartier collection. This one takes its signature style and adds a twist . Round watches, especially sporty ones, aren't the most common at Cartier. Françoise also appreciates offering watches with a slightly larger diameter, in this case a handsome 33mm that gives this Santos a real presence on the wrist and will suit both men and women equally.
History
Like the Tank, the Santos is one of Cartier's iconic models. It was designed in 1904 by Louis Cartier for his aviator friend Alberto Santos-Dumont. A pioneering watch, not only for aviation but also in the history of watchmaking: it was the first men's wristwatch. In the 1980s, the range split into the Santos-Dumont, which remained faithful to the original design, and the Santos, which gained a more modern look thanks to its integrated bracelet. Even today, the Cartier Santos is available in various versions and continues to enjoy undeniable success!
